Gramvousa Island
A short boat ride away from Balos Lagoon is the uninhabitated island of Gramvousa, famous for its Venetian-built castle that once protected Crete from Turkish occupation. The island also managed to gain itself a pirate reputation, with island residents constantly looting passing boats. If you take the 20-minute climb up to the castle ruins, you’ll be greeted with panoramic views of the ocean and nearby islands.

Balos – queen of Cretan beaches. Sky blue clear waters lagoon. I’d always thought my travels had taken me to beaches with some pretty incredible turquoise waters, but then I went to Crete and my mind was blown. Balos Lagoon literally takes the cake for the most vibrant, turquoise water I’ve ever laid eyes on! With looks like that, it’s no surprise Prince Charles and Princess Diana paid a visit on their private yacht back in the day.

Falssarna beach

Elafonisi beach- Pink paradise. Elafonisi (Greek: Ελαφονήσι [elafoˈnisi] “deer island”) is an island located close to the southwestern corner of the Mediterranean island of Crete, of which it is administratively a part, in the municipality of Kissamos of the regional unit of Chania. When the weather is fine it is possible to walk to the island through the shallow water. The island is a protected nature reserve. It is known for its pink sand beaches, created by tidal and wave-induced deposits of pigmented microorganisms living in a symbiotic relationship with native seaweed.

Melidoni
The Melidoni Cave is located about 1 800 metres northwest of the village. It has an extremely interesting history and amazing archaeological findings some of which are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno. The Melidoni cave is also called “Gerondospilios”. It was used for religious ceremonies. During the Minoan Civilization, it was a place of worship for Talos the bronze giant guardian of Crete who protected the island of Crete from enemies. It is of archaeological and historical interest. In October 1823 370 women and children and 30 warriors who hid from Hussein Bey sought refuge in the Melidoni cave. When he found out, the cave was surrounded by his army and he asked Cretan people to surrender. When they refused to do so, Ottomans started to attack them. Three months later they dropped combustible materials into an opening leading to the cave and set it on fire. Men, women and children lost their lives in the cave in January 1824. In the central room of the cave there is an ossuary containing the bones of the heroes of Melidoni cave. The arched entrance to the cave is leading to the first chamber of the cave called “Room of Heroes”, where we see “Mnemion” (Monument), a complex filled with stalagmites. On the way to “Stavrodromi” (Crossroad) we get into the right chamber. We reach the “Pashley Room” where stalagmites and stalactites create a wonderful complex. As we keep on walking, the rock formations give the impression of being on another planet. In the “Room of the rocks” through a narrow path we reach the “Chamber of Katavothra” and we turn right to the “Iperoon” .Walking down the cave we reach “Stavrodromi” again and we walk on the left side of the cave which has only one chamber “The Chamber of Curtains”, which is adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Milatos cave
The Cave of Milatos is located in the prefecture of Lassithi, 3 km outside Milatos village. Although the cave doesn’t have many stalactites and stalagmites, it has historical and sentimental importance for the locals as this is where about 3,600 people were slaughtered by the Turks in February 1823, during the Greek Revolution.
The cave is quite large, 73 meters long and 63 meters wide. Measuring about 2,100 sq.m., it has eight entrances and the height varies from one to three meters. Ancient remains found inside testify to the presence of people in the Neolithic times.
When the Revolution started for the Greeks to deliberate from the Ottoman rule, Crete had also risen and the Turks were trying to suspend the revolutionary actions by burning villages and killing people. To save themselves, the residents of Milatos found shelter inside the cave. The men were protecting the entrance and the Turks had circled the cave, not letting them out.
Two weeks passed, from February 3rd to 15th, and the Greeks suffered from hunger and thirst. Exhausted as they were, they made a brave decision: to escape the cave and fight the Turks, hoping that some of them would survive. However, the Turks brutally killed most of them, the 18 priests were burned to death and those who survived were sold as slaves to Egypt.
To commemorate this tragic event, a small church of Saint Thomas was built inside the cave in 1935 and a memorial to host the bones of the killed people. A small service is held every year in this cave to their memory.
To go to the cave, you park your car in the valley beneath and then take a narrow footpath on the slopes of a gorge, about 200 meters long.

Matala
The artificial caves in the cliff of the Matala bay were created in the Neolithic Age. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period. In the year 220 BC, Matala was occupied by the Gortynians, and during the Roman period, Matala became the port of Gortys. It has been suggested that the caves were once used as tombs, but it is more likely that they were used as living spaces, given their volume (corpses do not need that much room to walk around). One of the caves is called “Brutospeliana” because according to the legend it was frequented by the Roman general Brutus.Matala was then a fishing village. In the 1960s, the caves were occupied by hippies who were later driven out by the church and the military junta. Matala is now a popular tourist destination relying on coach tours and summer visitors. There are many gift shops and bars. Matala’s hippie history is celebrated during the three-day Matala Beach Festival, held every June since 2011.
